Conclusion

During the 1800s in England, there was a large shift in both writing and attitude. If one defines poetry as emotion, as Wordsworth does, then it stands to reason that emotion changed throughout this time as well. Emotion, and it’s limits, are all present through poetry, and are shown shifting through the time. As poets became more popular and were able to earn a better living writing, their ideas shifted, and the way their ideas were presented shifted as well. Women were able to be introduced into the published world, and by looking both what poetry is, and how it limits and affects the reader’s perspective, one can ascertain the mindset of the time period. In the beginning of the 1800s, when Wordsworth was writing, female authors were far fewer in number, but as we progress to Mill’s time, in the Victorian era, we see that not only has the perspective shifted in poetry, but also in legislature and the general society.
