Journal #11
After completing the cover letter assignment, I feel much more confident in my ability to properly write and format a cover letter. I have never had to write one before, and so this was a good exercise for me to understand the process before having to apply it to real life. I think the biggest thing I learned was wording and how to use key phrases in order to pique the interest of the reader. I have always used the phrase, “I’d be willing to…”, which I didn’t realize could be perceived as negative by the reader. I just assumed it was a phrase most people used, and didn’t think much of the connotations about it. Wording is really important and most of our critiques in our peer review were about phrasing of sentences and how to break them down to be more effective. Ultimately, I think the biggest takeaway for me was just getting the experience of writing a cover letter under my belt, as it’s not something I’ve had to do, but it is something important for my future.
