So I did not write my cover letter and my resume for the same job, but if I were to focus on the job I actually want (a librarian), I would definitely highlight my experience with at the library on campus. I also might touch on my experience working with children and how that would apply towards libraries being for patrons of all ages. I would talk about how working at the UNE library has given me a wide variety of experience due to working in the library in all times of day. I have worked overnights, early mornings, late evenings, and afternoons. This means I am easily adaptable to any work environment, and am able to function ad be capable of preforming tasks regardless of the time. I also would talk about being confident in using library programs such as Sierra, which is a circulation program for checking books in and out. I am also familiar with re-shelving books and being able to navigate the Dewey Decimal system accurately, so that books don’t end up in the wrong spot. I have also helped students out with finding sources for research and papers, meaning that I have experience working with databases like the UNE library service or JSTOR. Ultimately, I likely would not touch on my past experience in retail and service, as I don’t believe they are very pertinent, but I would mention them as a way of talking about my customer service ability. I believe I have gained a lot of patience and friendliness as a result of those jobs, both of which are important when working with patrons of all ages in a library.
