Journal #4
I liked my final run of my speech, honestly. I am a very laid back speaker, and I felt like that was reflected while still staying on topic and discussing what I set my topic out to be. I was able to heavily minimize ‘um’s and ‘uh’s, though I did feel like there were some awkward gaps in my speech that I was trying not to fill in. I practiced what I was going to say twice before recording the speech, though I don’t know how well that comes across. I often find that I come across as relatively impromptu, even if rehearsed, which is why I don’t tend to rehearse speeches to begin with. I am glad I had my outline up for reference, as it kept me on topic, and kept me from repeating myself, which was a piece of feedback I had been given after my dry run. I also tried to maintain more eye contact with the camera, rather than looking at my reflection, which I often do over Zoom to make sure I look “right” to the audience. I think that this was a successful beginning to the class, and while there are the areas of improvement I mentioned like gaps in speech, filler syllables, and consistently having an outline, I think this went well.
