Journal #7
Chapter 25 talked about the different types of special occasions one might give a speech at, such as a wedding, based on function. In an event in which you are inspiring a group of people, your language should reflect that, and include motivational examples, rather than a string of jokes. The chapter put into perspective just how widely varied speeches can be, and emphasized the importance of understanding the goal of the speech, and working from there. Using the function of the speech to outline and set the tone is a great way to make sure you stay on track, and hold the attention of the audience in a meaningful way, which will help ensure your speech goes smoothly. Balancing serious vs. joking, stories vs. action, etc, are all ways to help calibrate the speech to the desired function.
